About Betsy:
Betsy joined Accelerated Sports Physical Therapy and Fitness in October 2024.
She began her career in sports and orthopedics at the Atlanta Rehabilitation and Performance Center. After a family move to Minnesota, she joined the Institute for Athletic Medicine (IAM) in 2009. There, she honed her skills in orthopedics, running, and spine care, earning a Board Certification in Orthopedic Physical Therapy in 2013 and a Spine Certification through the McKenzie Institute in 2014. She also completed requirements for IAM’s Running Special Program.
In 2014, Betsy began treating women’s urinary incontinence, driven by a clinical need and a desire to improve post-partum outcomes. Thanks to excellent mentorship and training opportunities she expanded her expertise to treat all genders and pelvic disorders.
Betsy held leadership roles as a clinical supervisor at the Edina and Hiawatha clinics, and as the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education for all IAM clinics, overseeing DPT student placements. When M Health Fairview acquired IAM, she saw an opportunity to use the organizational resources to start Minnesota’s first Women’s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program. From 2019 to 2024, she served as the Residency Director, education coordinator, and mentor, working to improve early access to clinical training and women’s health resources.
Betsy used her residency role to increase support and recognition for the need of pelvic health in various populations, including urinary incontinence in female athletes and the need to screen early to prevent drop-out from sports. She has also been active in educating peers and non-PT colleagues about the importance of accessible pelvic health as a fundamental aspect of musculoskeletal treatment.
Currently, Betsy teaches the Pelvic and Pregnancy Musculoskeletal content at the University of Minnesota’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program and is also involved in professional organizations that promote research and evidence-based practice in pelvic health. Her professional goal is to focus on improving women’s outcomes through exercise, education, and prevention.
Getting Personal with Betsy:
Sports I competed in and the one I excelled in: I competed in swimming, volleyball, basketball, track, and later in life, triathlon. I excelled in swimming predominantly because my mom was a swim coach, and we were always at the pool. I still enjoy competing in open water swimming in our beautiful lakes.
Favorite sports moment: 2008 Beijing Olympics-Men’s 4x100 freestyle relay where Jason Lezak's anchor leg helped Michael Phelps win 8 gold medals in the same games. Also: 1983 Men’s Basketball National Championship Game- I didn’t watch it when it happened, but re-watched Jim Valvano’s “Never Give Up” speech and game highlights about as many times as native Minnesotans have watched “Miracle on Ice”.
Favorite sports team: Minnesota Vikings
Hobbies: Outdoor water activities, photography, travel, the latest streaming shows, watching sports, and anything my girls are interested in.
Family: Brandon (husband), Reese and Kate (daughters), and D.J. (Golden Retriever)
Resides: Southwest Minneapolis
